The Nova Gorica Regional Office of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, founded in 1961, is responsible for cultural heritage in the Nova Gorica region, with cultural monuments declared of high importance by the state, among them the Rihenberg Castle, the Maks Fabiani Garden in Štanjel, the Idrija Quicksilver Mine, and the Franja Partisan Hospital. Archaeological research is also underway in several locations. The office has a branch in Štanjel and a restoration workshop and depots in Solkan.
